For many people, psychotherapy is an unfamiliar concept. Therefore, deciding to come for therapy can feel much like venturing into the unknown and can stir up feelings of anxiety. Having a clear understanding of the process together from the start can help to manage expectations and these anxiety levels.
My therapeutic goal is to create a safe, supportive and nurturing space where individuals can heal, connect with their inner selves and ultimately live more optimal and meaningful lives. I prefer to use an integrative holistic person centered approach and make use of a combination of different modalities such as cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behavioural therapy, solution focused therapy, creative expressive art therapy and play therapy, to encourage a good fit between my client's needs and the therapeutic process.
The therapeutic process usually begins with an initial 1-3 sessions, in which the psychologist asks questions to gain an understanding of your reason for seeking therapy.
In the case of child therapy (play therapy), an initial family session is conducted in which a complete history of the child and family is taken.
Based on this, a treatment plan or approach is discussed which may include the length of therapy, modalities used and the role-players to be involved in the therapeutic process.
Therapeutic sessions with children often include frequent parent and family sessions, as it is important to consider any challenges in relation to the child’s family and social context. This allows for important role-players in the child’s life to be involved in the process and to work alongside the child’s process.
